MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Happy Bean coffee shop is in the process of changing hands from Nate and Cassie Johnson to John and Jill Ballenger. Located in Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Hunter Hall, 221 S. Main St., in downtown Mount Vernon, the limited liability company has new owners, but the original mission and intent lives on.
“We’re really excited about Happy Bean’s future under John and Jill’s leadership. Together they have a lot of great plans to further develop what Nate and I have already started, and we are so thankful for the opportunity to empower another local family to invest in the growth of the community,” said Nate (’14) and Cassie (Porter ’14) Johnson.
Happy Bean originated near Apple Valley before relocating to Hunter Hall in January 2016. Happy Bean makes it a point to employ MVNU students and to partner with local ministries to see breakthrough in the community.
The Johnsons said their tagline “#brewhope” was aimed toward empowering “all community members to see the potential of their life and families. When you buy a cup of coffee at our store, you’re helping local families in need. Together we can see our community grow closer and find hope.”
New owners John (’95) and Jill (Brown ’94) Ballenger are preparing to continue the journey as they take on all details of the business in January 2018.
“We were thrilled when Nate and Cassie introduced such a high-quality coffee culture to downtown Mount Vernon. The hard work that went into establishing Happy Bean and its mission, is what fuels our vision for the future,” said John and Jill Ballenger.
